Design Lesson - Aldo Cibic

Brera Design District

My opinion of Brera may be somewhat biased because I’ve always had my home and studio in this area since I came to work in Milan at the end of the 1970s.
For this reason I can consider myself to all effects a witness as to how this part of the city has changed in these years and why I still like living here.
It is a town within the city, where there are glimpses of the old Milan, where you can still find small craft workshops living naturally alongside various expressions of the Milan avant-garde metropolis. The design showrooms, the modern art shops, the fashion shops, the newest and most attractive restaurants, the bars, the bakers, the food shops, the news-stand with the most international selection of papers in Milan and, until recently, the headquarters of the Corriere della Sera, make the Brera quarter a place where the life of the district is enriched by the lives of those who come from outside and, thanks to this variety, produce a very special energy of great quality and a sort of “Milano style” and “Made in Italy”, concentrated in one place.

I find the decision to formalise ZONA BRERA an operation that has more clearly defined a polarity and its characteristics, which in addition to the specific fact relating to design, carries on a virtuous process of enhancement of the city so that those who live and work in the “Brera desgin district” perceive a greater sense of belonging and have every reason for continually raising the quality of the district and of what it offers.

Creating connections and communicating innovation

We are living in a time of great changes where project culture is being questioned at various levels, including design. If we want to think of the future we must look at the past to understand what was good and interesting and can again be useful to us. We must seek a thorough understanding of our times and of the hierarchies of needs that our designing ability can try to satisfy.
We face complex problems that require a multi-disciplinary approach. The answers cannot be limited to simple objects, but must include processes that lead us along a road that enables us to identify richer, more complex project outputs, where new technologies, humanistic knowledge, craft and industrial knowhow, internet (…) can all together contribute to building a new renaissance.

These are series pieces and limited series of various kinds, from the lamp to the sofa, from the table to the display cabinet, produced by Italian craftsmen. The materials are ceramic, fabric, real and recycled wood, with a design carefully conceived in its form and execution, to make up a welcoming, contemporary environment.
